Won Choi’s approach to her work may be called that of an artist/poet/researcher. Her images, which are abstract in essence, evoke deeply subjective experiences, dream states and memories. Her sculptural forms grow out of the human figure, costume and the natural landscape, which often merge together to reveal spiritual meaning. She makes diverse associations very much in the tradition of Henry Moore and David Smith, sculptors much admired by Choi. Her sculptural language expresses the feeling of the mystery of the world, life and existence through making the relationship between the universe and us. In a way we become a container and the universe is the body of the divine. Her works are inspired by the heaven, sunrays, the Milky Way, clouds, rainbow, waterfall, streaks of rain and so on as elements of spiritual landscape. Though spontaneous and free in spirit, her work has a carefully ordered structure.
